Totally agree with this, after being in this industry for more than ten years, mostly consulting on challenging projects, I can tell you one more thing about this, it’s all about the culture, if you only need people that follow directions to the T , even when the direction does not make sense or wrong, or worse don’t even care about what is about than automated tests are perfect. Otherwise, a good engineer good more or less be able to see the level of another engineer ( I’m involved in the hiring process for more than 5 years) and I never made anyone do an automated, timed, code test. And I never had a bad hire on any of my teams.
